Corneal evaluation of prospective aphakic wearers of contact lenses.

چکیده
A recent investigation' has shown that the comea of the aphakic eye swells less than that of the normal fellow eye when fitted with identical hydrophilic lenses. This confirms previous clinical impressions and would suggest that a metabolic difference may exist between the corneas of the normal and the aphakic eye. The present investigation was therefore devised to assess certain aspects of the basal corneal metabolism of a group of monocular aphakic patients, the fellow normal eye being used as the control.

Incidence of keratitis of varying severity among contact lens wearers.
AIM To determine the incidence of non-severe keratitis (NSK) and severe keratitis (SK) among wearers of current generation contact lenses. METHODS A 12 month, prospective, hospital based epidemiological study was conducted by examining all contact lens wearers presenting with a corneal infiltrate/ulcer to a hospital centre in Manchester. A clinical severity matrix was used to differentiate be...
متن کاملA randomized trial of the effect of soft contact lenses on myopia progression in children.
PURPOSE Soft contact lenses have been reported to increase the progression of myopia. The purpose of this study was to determine whether soft contact lenses affect the progression of myopia in children. METHODS Children between the ages of 8 and 11 years with -1.00 to -6.00 D myopia and less than 1.00 D astigmatism were randomly assigned to wear soft contact lenses (n = 247) or spectacles (n ...
متن کاملExtended-wear aphakic soft contact lenses and corneal ulcers.
A review of 100 aphakic extended-wear soft contact lenses is presented for the period July 1980 to August 1981. Four previously successfully fitted patients with either American Optical Company's Sofcon or Cooper Laboratories' Permalens for extended wear developed corneal ulcers either directly under the lenses or shortly after removal. Three of the female patients were well controlled diabetic...
متن کاملDry eye in contact lens wearers as a growing public health problem.
BACKGROUND The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between the self-reported symptoms and objective signs of dry eye disease in long-term rigid gas-permeable (RGP) or soft contact lens (SCL) wearers. SUBJECTS AND METHODS The study included 84 eyes of Caucasian RGP and SCL wearers between the age of 15 and 71 who wore contact lenses on a continuous daily basis for more than 1 year...
متن کاملEffect of long-term contact lens wear on corneal endothelial cell morphology and function.
Anterior segment fluorophotometry (topical) and central endothelial cell photography were performed on 40 long-term (2-23 years) contact lens wearers (four groups of ten each: hard, soft, gas permeable, and gas permeable plus prior lens usage) and 40 non-contact lens wearers of similar ages. Morphologically, the endothelial cells of contact lens wearers showed greater variability in size and sh...
